Will Using an Electric Toothbrush Help My Teeth Stay Whiter for Longer?

If you have just invested in having your teeth whitened at the Smile Studio in London, then you’re probably pretty interested in ways of helping them stay whiter for longer. One of the questions frequently asked by Dr Wyman Chan‘s patients is whether or not an electric toothbrush will be more effective at prolonging the effects of teeth whitening in London. There are certainly plenty on the market, but they can be quite a substantial investment to make, so are they really worth the money?

Certainly some people may find them easier to use, especially if they have limited movement in their hands. They can be an absolute godsend for people who find it more difficult to grip objects, and who find it awkward to manipulate a manual toothbrush. Even though many people do find their teeth feel a lot cleaner after using an electric toothbrush, there’s a little long-term research into the actual dental health benefits.

The Cochrane report in 2009 did find toothbrushes that had an oscillating action could be more effective at removing plaque bacteria compared to manual toothbrushes, but concluded the long-term benefits on oral health are unclear. An earlier report in 2003 by the Cochrane Oral Health Group found using electric toothbrushes with an oscillating action could result in less incidences of gingivitis, an early form of gum disease, but it also found using a manual toothbrush correctly could be equally as effective.

Electrically powered toothbrushes have been around for decades, and can be electric or sonic. Electric toothbrushes are designed to replicate the motion of the hand, so they helped do the work for you. The bristles on the brush are designed to either move back and forth or to rotate, and will rotate between 3,000 and 7,500 motions a minute. Sonic toothbrushes have a vibrating motion of between 30,000 and 40,000 strokes per minute. To put things into perspective someone using a traditional toothbrush will achieve around 300 strokes a minute which is obviously considerably less.

Some people simply don’t like the action of an electric toothbrush, and they can require a little bit of getting used to. Most dentists think it’s down to technique as to whether or not teeth are cleaned effectively, and to simply using the right type of toothbrush and not brushing too hard. It’s possible to buy whitening toothbrushes that are either manual or electric, so the choice is largely down to personal preference and whether or not you want to invest in an electric toothbrush.

Regardless of the type of brush chosen, it is better to choose a brush head that has softer bristles as this is less likely to damage the gums. When a whitening toothbrush head is used in conjunction with whitening toothpaste and perhaps a whitening rinse, this should be enough to help prolong the effects of tooth whitening in London. In addition Dr Chan or another dentist at the Smile Studio in London will have given all patients instructions on when they can safely use the custom-made whitening trays or the Get2Smile system to give their smile a boost. The truth is that although brushing teeth correctly can help remove some of the surface stains, and may help teeth appear a little whiter for longer, they will eventually darken as now whitening treatment is permanent. It’s far more important to brush teeth correctly for good oral health.

What is the Difference between Teeth Bleaching and Teeth Whitening?

Teeth bleaching and teeth whitening in London are two terms that are often used interchangeably, but there are subtle differences. Teeth bleaching is used to describe a process where the products used contain carbamide or hydrogen peroxide, known as bleach, for instance the systems offered by our dental surgery use either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. This is where teeth are whitened to several shades lighter than their natural colour.

In comparison teeth whitening products don’t necessarily have to contain any bleaching agents and won’t whiten teeth beyond their natural shade. For example teeth whitening toothpastes may rely on the inclusion of slightly abrasive ingredients designed to remove surface staining. It can be confusing, but as a general rule any teeth whitening services offered by dental surgeries will use products containing hydrogen peroxide, and will lighten teeth beyond their natural colour but are quite likely to be called teeth whitening.

Tooth Whitening Safely and Effectively

If you want to achieve the best results then it really does pay to go to your dentist for teeth whitening in London. This ensures the process is safe and effective, and that you are prescribed the correct bleaching gel to achieve the look you want. The gels do come in several different strengths, and may contain carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide, but what is the difference, and how does it work?

Hydrogen peroxide is stronger than carbamide peroxide, so you’ll typically find that the percentages contained are higher in carbamide peroxide gels than in hydrogen peroxide, as hydrogen peroxide is about three times the strength. For instance a gel with 5% hydrogen peroxide will be the same strength as a carbamide peroxide gel with 15% strength. Gels with carbamide peroxide will release hydrogen peroxide once they come into contact with water and tend to be used for home teeth whitening systems, for instance our Perfect Trays home whitening system. Once the hydrogen peroxide has been released it begins to penetrate the tooth enamel which is slightly porous, bleaching out the stains in the enamel and the dentin layer underneath. The use of light or heat helps to accelerate this process.

Hydrogen Peroxide for Faster Tooth Whitening in London

The hydrogen peroxide gels used by our dental surgery is very pure, and the advantage of this is that it will be able to act more quickly on the tooth, so you’ll get faster results. Part of the reason for this is that the gels are water based and have fewer additives enabling them to penetrate the tooth more easily. These are used in conjunction with a thermal diffuser that uses heat energy to help the bleach penetrate the tooth. The advantage of using heat over light is that it is quicker, and can help to lessen tooth sensitivity both during the treatment in our surgery, and afterwards. Another advantage of this diffuser is that it is far less bulky than the traditional bleaching lamps, so the tooth whitening in London is more comfortable.

Carbamide Peroxide Whitening at Home

After your teeth have been safely whitened then we’ll provide you with our Perfect Trays system to use at home. This system uses carbamide peroxide gels, so you’ll notice the strengths look quite high. The reason for providing carbamide gels for use at home is simply because they are a more stable form of peroxide, and are easier and safer for home use. You’ll probably need to use these trays for a couple of weeks or so, for a couple of hours a day. Dr Wyman Chan also gives you advice on touching up your smile.

Professional Teeth Whitening in London vs Over-the Counter Treatments

Do you hate seeing stained and discoloured teeth every time you smile? Perhaps you find yourself actively avoiding smiling. If so then you are a great candidate for tooth whitening in London, but then the next question is whether to get it done professionally, and properly by an expert dentist such as Dr Chan, or whether to opt for one of the many over-the-counter kits that can be bought in chemists or online. While the over-the-counter kits may be cheaper, the results obtained cannot be compared with professional teeth whitening in London. In fact it could end up being a false economy, and definitely isn’t as safe. The truth is that having your teeth whitened properly in a London dental surgery such as the Smile Studio is probably much more affordable than you might imagine.

The Advantages of Having Teeth Whitened Professionally

Dr Chan is a dentist who specialises in teeth whitening. He has spent years researching a developing a range of bleaching products designed to safely whiten teeth, and has a huge number of celebrity clients whose smiles pay testimony to the excellent results he is able to achieve. You may have known people who have had their teeth whitened elsewhere, either professionally or by using over-the-counter kits who have complained about tooth sensitivity afterwards. The bleaches used by Dr Chan have been especially developed to minimise or even eliminate this symptom.

You’ll also have the added benefit of knowing your teeth are healthy enough to be whitened, as you’ll receive a full check-up before any treatments are carried out. You can ask questions, and will receive an honest assessment from Dr Chan as to how far you can safely whiten your teeth. You’ll receive advice as to whether you’d be better off having your teeth whitened in the dental surgery, or if you may be more suitable for whitening at home using either trays or Dr Chan’s award winning Get2Smile whitening kit.

If you choose to have your teeth whitened at the Smile Studio then you’ll be given custom made trays to take home, so you can top up the whitening treatments as recommended by Dr Wyman Chan. If you choose to whiten your teeth at home using a system from the Smile Studio, then you’ll receive precise instructions on how to use it, and will be prescribed the correct strength of bleaching gel for your teeth. It is extremely unlikely that you will experience any problems, but you do have the peace of mind in knowing that professional help and advice is just a phone call away.

The Risks and Disadvantages of Buying an Over-the Counter Teeth Whitening Kit

The number one risk of buying an over-the-counter teeth whitening kit has to be the fact that you are not obliged to have your teeth checked by a dentist before whitening. Even though the whitening ingredients used in these kits are a lot less powerful than those used by professionals, they could still cause damage to a mouth that already has dental problems. The most likely side effect is tooth sensitivity or even pain, as the whitening ingredients can penetrate unhealthy gums and teeth far more easily than in a healthy mouth.

There is also the risk of using these kits incorrectly, or of getting the bleaching gels onto the delicate gum tissues. The trays that come with some of these kits tend to be one size fits all, so there is far more risk of the gels leaking out during the whitening process.

Above all, they will not achieve the same effects as teeth whitening in London as the products used aren’t so powerful. Professional tooth whitening in London can give stunning results, safely and quickly.

What is a Perfect Smile?

If you’re thinking about having teeth whitening in London, then you’re probably interested in getting a more perfect smile, but what exactly does this mean? There are several aspects that make your smile beautiful, as for example it can depends on the number of teeth that are visible when you smile or laugh.

The Length of your Teeth

If you smile slightly then ideally you should be showing the tips of your upper teeth. Another thing to consider is if your teeth are in proportion. Ideally your front two teeth, your central incisors, should be a little longer than the teeth either side, your lateral incisors, as this creates a more youthful and appealing smile line. Your canines should be approximately the same length as your central incisors.

Are Your Teeth the Right Width, or Do they Stick Out?

The next thing to consider is the width of your front teeth, as front teeth that are too narrow can make your face look longer, while those that are too wide can make your face appear slightly fatter. Another concern is if front teeth stick out, as lots of people simply didn’t get the chance for orthodontic treatment as children. Nowadays there are lots of different options for orthodontic treatment, as while traditional braces are still the best option for some orthodontic cases, many others will be suitable for invisible braces that are far less obtrusive.

Having a Gap In Between the Front Teeth

Lots of people have a slight gap in between the front teeth, called a diastema. While this may not be considered a perfect smile, it can actually look quite nice and adds character. There are a number of famous people, such as Madonna and Samuel L. Jackson who have a diastema, and their smiles would not be the same without it. If you really hate the gap between your two front teeth then options include using veneers to minimise or close it completely, or orthodontic treatment.

Does it Really Matter if a Smile is Less Than Perfect?

Most people’s natural smiles will have minor imperfections, as it would be very rare to be born with teeth that are considered perfect. But does this really matter? The truth is that for most of us it probably doesn’t, and these imperfections can make a smile more unique and endearing. Options such as veneering or crowning teeth can be quite costly, and orthodontic treatment will take anywhere from six months to two years to complete.

In comparison teeth whitening in London is an easy fix to brightening up a smile, and can help make minor imperfections less noticeable. People are more likely to be critical about teeth they perceive as being stained and yellow than they are about a nice white smile which automatically draws compliments. Teeth that are slightly crooked are less noticeable when their colour is uniformly white. Dr Wyman Chan’s Smile Studio can produce amazing results within as little as an hour, at costs that are very affordable, but ultimately the choice is yours.

If you are genuinely bothered by the shape and size of your teeth, or their alignment then it may be worth your while investigating more extensive cosmetic dental surgery to be used in combination with tooth whitening in London.
